hiya,

I have brought my first CBR.

Its a UK bike and named a honda cbr 600 f. the log book says its an F4.

The year is a 2004.

how do i know if its an i. its an injection so is that what the i means.

here in the uk i was told that the f4 was for the 2004 - f3 for the 2003 and so on.

but looking through this site i see that there are 1998 f4's.

 

what makes a cbr to be an f4 or f4 i

I'm not sure about the years, but a 2004 is an F4i.  In the UK it is usually called an F Sport.  Basically, it's just a version number.  Hurricane (basically the F1), F2, F3, F4, F4i, in that order. 

Whoever told you that the model year corresponds to the F number was dead wrong.  I.e, 2001 is NOT an F1.

Since I’m at work I cannot look up things as easily to fully answer your question, but this is what I can tell you:

In the USA, the Honda CBR started with the “Hurricane” in 1987 (or sooner) untill 1990 I belive that it was also called the CBR 600 F (according to Wikipedia, it was changed because Insurance companies did not like the name).
1991-1994 Honda made the F2,
1995-1998 the F3,
1999-2000 the F4
2001-2006 the F4i (Yes, the I stands for injection, because all of the other bikes were carburated)

Since 2006 there has not been a new “F” series Honda (It basically got replaced by the RR, which started in 2003 I belive). If you have a picture, I think anyone on this board could say which one of the respective USA names it has (if there is a picture, my work browser bloked it, so sorry).

As this sub-forum title shows, yours might be called either “F” or “F Sport”, but I do not know the difference (id assume that F Sport would be the F4i, but you say yours is a F and fuel Injected…. So I’m confused)

You've been told wrong.  Honda started coming out with F models almost 20 years ago. 
The first one was F1 Hurricane that entered the market in 1987. 
Followed by a much improved F2. 
I think F3 came out in 1995.
1999 brought the F4
and the first F4i came out in 2001.

I am pretty sure you have a fuel injected model.  THe easiest way to check without taking the fairing off is by looking at the left handle bar and checking if there's a choke control.  If you have one that means your bike is carburated, if not then it is fuel ijected.   Also your instument cluster should have the "FI" ligiht on it : when the key is in the on position and you turn the engine switch on you should hear a several second long whine followed by the "FI" light turning off.

I think you should really learn up on bikes before taking your new toy on the streets.  No offense but if you dont know what the choke is used for then chances are you dont know anything about riding which will get you into trouble.

I do know exactly what my bike is.. perhaps i asked my question wrong.

Here in the uk we use different model numbers and we dont use the F4 name for earlier cbr's.

The reason i am trying to work out where my bike fits in here is i find this site much better than the uk one i am a member to.

My bike is an injection, here all bikes from 2001 went injected, but we dont use the i.

the 3 versions were the f and the fs (sport) which come with dual seat and no centre stand.. plus other detailed changes. and then the RR.

Well, 2001-2003 CBR F4i have split (dual) seat here

2004-2006 CBR F4i Banana seat (None of the USA CBRs have Center stands, all of them are lateral)

But regardless, weather you have a F4, F4i, F or Fs this is the place to be

Ps: is that your bike in your avatar? kinda blury, but it looks like it has a banana seat.... so 2004-2006 F4i.... (well it kinda like like a GSXR to me too)

Pps: do you not have a rather large sticker on the front of the frame (don't remember which side now, but i think on the right) Black background with White letters which has the VIN number and year of production?

These are photos of my bike, its a 2004 UK model cbr 600 f (F4). as you can see it has the centre stand and banana seat.

In the UK there is a 600f S (sports version) that comes with dual seat and only side stand and a few suspension tweaks.

As far as i have researched the earlier bikes had names as 600 fw, 600 fx, 600 fy, these wre the pre 2001 models with the single headlight.

The 2001 model is called the cbr600 f1 or f1s (the sports model)  The 2002 was called cbrf2 and f2s

In 2003 there was the 600f3 and the 600rr3 with under seat exhaust.

In 2004 there was the cbr600 f4 (which i have) and the cbr 600 rr4 (they did away with the sports)

2005 onwards the 2 models were the cbr600 f5/6/7/8 along with the cbr600rr5/6/7/8

And i now kow that in the US the F4's are known as the whole range.

I really like this site and just working out what americans call the differnet models so i dont get confused on reading peoples posts.

Well, your bike (in American terms, i guess) is a F4i. more specifically the 2004-2006

Just wondering, is the F7 and F8 any different from yours?

PS, that is cool that you have a center stand, i would not have had to buy my stands.....

Im not sure of the changes 2007 onwards.

It seems everything went cbr 600 RR after 2004.

I was looking through the following site where people host there bike pictures (USA mostly) quite a lot of different cbr'ds through the years.
