    1989 CBR600 Questions on buying

I have looked at this 1989 CBR600 recently and had a few questions about it as I was thinking about buying it.

This bike has 94K/km on it and looks to be pretty well taken care of (other than a few cosmetic things).

I took the bike into Honda to have the presale inspection done on it and everything came back good other than the front fairing is missing a chunk out of it (from the previous owner whom I guess laid it down a few times).  Everything they did on it though came back as being very good.  The cam chain and that stuff has been done, new tires last year, new disc brakes the year before.  The only thing it needs is that front fairing replaced (not a big deal though as it only affects the looks) and there is a dent in the gas tank but those things (to my knowledge) don't affect the performance much.

The thing is, when the guy rode it to Honda for me, I asked him how it ran and he said it was fine until about 5 mins into the ride and it began to run terribly.  We asked Honda to check it out but afterwards they said it ran fine for them.  I phoned the guy after he rode it home from Honda and asked again how it rode and he said about the same thing, good at first and then terrible.  He is mechanic and owns his own bike shop so he figured that it was most likely water in the carb.  I then talked to the person that is actually selling the bike and they said that it was because they haven't ridden the bike in over 2 months.

So is this a big problem?  The lady who is selling it says she is going to clean the carbs tomorrow and then I can come by and check it out again and make sure it is running good.  She is asking $1800 for the bike.  Is this a good deal if the bike is running good after the crab clean or should I be worried about something if it was doing that in the first place although everything at Honda checked out and everything (other than cosmetics) were written up as being good?

I think $1800 maybe a bit high but I've not been in the market to buy a bike that old, if it worth that then my 87' must be worth $1400 and it only got a few more miles on it and it runs good with 107,000 miles.

BTW, I am from Canada so that is Canadian currency and also Kilometers, not miles.

Sorry I should have paid more attention! Ok its got around 58,400 miles on it and if I had around $ 1719.00 USD I still don't think I would buy it? My 87' now then may only be worth $ 1019.00 USD.

Yeah, thats huge ripoff.  Either negotiate it way down or just look for a different bike.

Re: 1989 CBR600 Questions on buying

Found out the problem on it.  It wasn't the carbs (although they took all that apart and cleaned everything) but it was the exhaust pipe.  It is a super trapp pipe and I guess what happened is some of the packing had fallen in between a couple of the baffles and was not letting the pipe do what it needed over 5000RPM.  They have cleaned it all out now and said that it could use a repack so I wondering (if I decide to go for this bike) what would be a good offer to make?  I do like the bike but wanna get a good deal too.

Thats kinda hard to say not seeing the bike, but if I had to guess around $1200 but maybe up to $1400 CAD.

If you really like it and it checks out it dont need any work just see what you can get them down to?

Yeah, I think I will start at around $1400 and see what she says.  Hopefully she'll just take it and I can be on my way with a CBR under my *** :)

Just wandering if you made a deal on the CBR you was looking at? If so how is the bike?

Re: 1989 CBR600 Questions on buying

I did end up making a deal on it.  Got it for $1500 instead of the original $2000 she started at.

I am really enjoying it :)  I will post a pic as soon as I can and you guys can tell me what you think.

I had one question still though, where can I find a decent aftermarket fairing for an '89?  Checked out a few sites but didn't see much.  Any help would be awesome.

Glad you are happy with it. Dont know about body work I have not needed any, maybe Airtech if you want aftermarket or Targa if they make it for that old of a bike?
