    Converting F4i to GP shift....

    hey,
I've read that a person could change to a VFR shift lever and convert the F4i shifting to GP style shift.

has anyone done this? if so, what all components would I need. Also, how did it work? I'm kinda curious how it would benefit the shifting.

I have GP on my bike. Both race and street. Just go to a honda dealership and purchas a CBR XX shifter. Or if you want to be cheap about it just rotate the lingage on the shaft 180 degrees.

You will only notice a benefit if you race. It is easier to shift by pushing down rather than lifting up. That is about it. It will take some getting use to so if you do one bike do all and make sure you tell your friends before they take your bike. Nothing like thinking you are going to up shift and then actually down shift and have the rear end skip around. That will get your attention.

yah, friends don't ride my bike... so we should be cool there...

I was thinking of doing it for street use, but if you don't think it'd be an improvement there's really no point in it. I just think that it'd make 1st-2nd at WOT a lot easier.

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

Cutting the lingage???? That wouldnt work. If anything it would make it harder to shift.

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

Uhm.... I suppose if you cut it correctly and flipped the shift arm 180 degrees it would work, but then you have to figure out how to thread the linkage... I don't think it'd be a great idea.

I really wish I could find a pic of this somewhere, i wanna see how to do it.... I think it'd be a cheap mod, and it may clean up on the hard upshifts.

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

No there is no real advantage for the street. If you actually are the type who like to hang wheelies and shift while in the air this would be a huge disadvantage. But if you want to just try it and see for yourself all you have to do is this.
You shifting lingage attached to the shaft needs to rotate 180 degrees. I believe the stock version the rod goes towards the top of the shaft. Just put it so that the rod goes towards the bottom of the shaft and you have reverse shifting. If you dont like it put it back. I think allyou need is a 10mm wrench.

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

what are you cutting???? You dont cut anything. if you cut your rod it will either push into the shaft and not allow you to shift or you will end up readjusting you shift peddle so that the peddle is up higher in the air making it harder for you to shift. if you want email me your number and I will call you and explain how to do it over the phone. jersey_devil_68@hotmail.com

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

I will try and remember to take a picture of it this weekend and get you a picture. It is as easy as losening a bolt so that the linkage will come off the shaft (the engine shaft not the shaft that goes from foot peg to engine) and rotating it 180 degrees and putting it back on. But I will try and take a picture for you

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

I'm pretty sure I understand what you're saying...

I'm not a huge fan of riding wheelies and switching gears, so there's no harm done there...

I won't be able to ride until the snow is gone, so that'll be another few weeks, but I'll definately give it a try. Thanks man

    Here's a picture for you:

Keep in mind that unless you alter your front sprocket cover, you'll need to run without it.

    Hope that helps.

Re: Converting F4i to GP shift....

I THINK I CAN SHED A LITTLE LIGHT ON THIS SUBJECT. I HAVE NEVER POSTED BEFORE BUT HAVE BEEN READING DISCUSSIONS FOR ABOUT A YEAR. I HAVE A 2002 F4I AND MY GIRLFRIEND HAS A 2003 F4I. I HAVE CONVERTED MINE TO THE GP SHIFT OR REVERSE SHIFT AS I FOUND IT IS NAMED. THE WEBSITE THAT I FOUND MOST HELPFUL IS

    www.600ccrule.com

OFF TO THE LEFT YOU WILL SEE A PLACE TO CLICK ON "BIKE TIPS" THEN ABOUT HALF WAY DOWN THE PAGE UNDER "MODIFICATIONS" CLICK ON "REVERSE SHIFTING A F4I/F4" THERE IS A PARAGRAPH THAT WALKS YOU THROUGH IT AND 6 PICS THAT WILL ALSO HELP OUT.

JUST TO HELP CLARIFY ABOUT CUTTING SOMETHING. THE ONLY THING I HAD TO CUT WAS THE SPROCKET COVER AND IF YOU TAKE IT OFF, IT IS NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL. EVERYTHING HAS WORKED FINE AND I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN YOU SHIFT FROM NEUTRAL TO FIRST YOU DON'T HAVE AS LOUD OF AN AWFUL SOUND. I THINK IT IS PART THAT YOU HAVE CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THE LEVER AND IT DOESN'T "POP" INTO GEAR.
SO SITTING AT A REDLIGHT AND THEN SHIFTING INTO 1ST DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SO NOTICABLE.
