My F2 to F4i Body Swap

Well I'm finally done and pretty happy with the results - still only primered but the look is growing on me and may not get the glossy urethane I bought for it. I enjoy the strange looks I get from those who recognise that its not really an F4i as well as those completely convinced that it is. For those who ask why, it was a simple matter of aftermarket availability which ended up paying for itself two fold. While I love the F2, the bodywork and front headlight left something to be desired. I looked at race bodywork to clean it up as well as some expensive projector headlights but cost an avaialability were just too steep for such an old bike. Instead, I sold off all my stock bodywork on Ebay which funded the entire conversion plus a bunch of tanks of gas!

hey, I was wondering if the conversion was pretty straight foward, where did you get the farings, and did you have to fabricate anything? thanks. oh yea and price for everything would be much appreciated as well :)

Re: My F2 to F4i Body Swap

do you have a complete detail of what you did and all the parts you needed?  Any additional hacking that you had to do??  I had the impression that all the body work and such had different mounting locations...

Re: My F2 to F4i Body Swap

There have been several people on this board who have done this conversion in various ways. Between all of us you can surely find the method that suits your needs best so chekc the F2/F3 category as well as do a search. Reducing weight, improving aerodynamics, better lighting and of course a better look were all my motives so I did a few things that may have been a little radical. While I fabricated my own aluminum fairing stay to adapt my stock F2 guages, the stock F4i stay and an adapter plate a the neck may produce the same results. There is very little room to mount the guages, even with my own stay, without hitting the handlebar accessories. I used bunjie cords and zip ties to first align the holes in the F4i side fairings to the F2 engine components, then mocked up the front fairing, bolting it to the sides and making sure all my handlebar clearance was there lock to lock. Once the front fairing is mounted solid, the sides are just a matter of drilling a few holes where holes didn't exist before, trimming the plastics in various places like the radiator cap/ header / clutch cable and a few other places. The bottom mounts under the footpeg can be reused factor on one side but the other requires drilling the plcastic. I did not add any new mount points to my frame but rather reused all the exising mounting points. The center side fairing bolts should have stand-offs added to the fiarings to keep from bending them in when tight. I had to cut the stock F2 tail frame and relocate my ignition box in order to mount the tail. Since my tail was a fiberglass mono-tail, I just made a few aluminum plates to mount to the stock seat bolt mounts and create a threaded mount horizontally aligned to the stock F4i tail holes. I used threaded rod and threaded tube to bridge the 3" gap to the tail and recreate new boltable holes. Aside from cutting the tail frame, all of this can be reversed.  Thats a bout it. I sold al my stock F2 plastic on Ebay for twice as much as it cost me to aquire all the conversion parts as well as high end polyeurethane multi coat paint. A couple of additional mods were the F4i dual H4 mod with an inline switch to allow running a single headlight durring the day. I have the headlights alternated with relays so that on highbeam, on is low and one is high which completel floods the road with light. On low, I have the additional switch to lock the highbeam off or on if needed. My front signal lights were shaved on the fiaring so I'm expiramenting with signal mirrors... only advice I can give here is dont go cheap!  Good luck.

Re: My F2 to F4i Body Swap

What a ride this has been. Finally got the bike completed... well, for the most part. I ended up stripping it all down, customizing a completely new tail frame as well as a few other upgrades:

    97 F3 Engine
    97 F3 Complete Front End
    Penske Rear Shock
    Steel Braided Brake lines
    HyperPro Steering Dampner
    Braced Swingarm
    F4i Guage Swap

Okay, just tell us the truth... You went out and bought a new bike, didn't you?

    Just kidding.  Great Job!

Re: My F2 to F4i Body Swap

You know, as I was wrapping this up it occurred to me that I'm at the point of no more mods. Anything more than this is just too rediculous to even consider and I'll just have to go buy a different bike... probably a 1000cc Street Fighter since I already have  good canyon carver ;)
